What might happen in Wednesday season 2?

During one of Variety's 'in-conversation' interviews with Elle Fanning, Jenna Ortega revealed the titular character in Wednesday won't explore her romantic side in season two. In contrast, season one saw her in a love triangle between the sheriff's son Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan) and fellow Nevermore Academy pupil Xavier Thorpe (Percy Hynes White).

"We're ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday, which is really great," she said. "We've decided we want to lean into the horror aspect of the show a little bit more. Because it is so lighthearted, and a show like this with vampires and werewolves and superpowers, you don't want to take yourself too seriously."

Previously, Alfred Gough has opened up about where he'd like to see Wednesday's character go in the future. He told TVLine, "The series is really about a girl who sees the world in black and white, and learning there are shades of grey.

"I think like any relationship or any friendship, it can get complicated by other factors. It’s never going to be smooth sailing. And it’s really her learning to navigate the ups and downs of friendship."

Gough went on to reveal that he'd like to see more from the rest of Wednesday's family in a potential season two. That's Wednesday's mother Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones), father Gomez (Luis Guzmán) and brother Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez). He told TVLine, "We felt like we just touched the surface with those characters and the actors are so amazing in those roles."

However, he added that creators "really want to focus the show on Wednesday," but that they "definitely want to feature the family as we did this season in a couple of episodes, if we were to get a second season."

When was Wednesday season 2 confirmed?

Netflix finally confirmed the news on 6th January 2023, in an exclusive interview with creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar on Tudum.com. They said, "It’s been incredible to create a show that has connected with people across the world. Thrilled to continue Wednesday’s tortuous journey into season two. We can’t wait to dive head first into another season and explore the kooky spooky world of Nevermore. Just need to make sure Wednesday hasn’t emptied the pool first."

The streaming service previously teased the news when they shared a Wednesday gif alongside a series of question marks, which fans took as a big sign something was on its way. "???????" the official Netflix Twitter account wrote, alongside a clip of Wednesday typing "The End" on her typewriter

Previously, Alfred Gough expressed his interest in more episodes, too, telling Empire, "[Screenwriter] Miles [Millar] and I are talking amongst ourselves about it. There's definitely more that you can explore in the world of the Addamses."

What is Wednesday season 2's expected release date?

It's hard to know for sure as production hasn't started and no filming has been done. If we look at the timeline of season one, which began filming in September 2021 and wrapped production in March 2022, it took eight months for the show to land on Netflix.

According to Deadline, filming tentatively began in April 2024, and following the pattern of season one (when Wednesday took six months to film, and eight months of post-production and editing), we could possibly expect the second season in mid-2025.

Wednesday is now streaming on Netflix.
